Walk It, Bike It, Run It, Swim It, Crawl It

On October 5 I will competing in my first triathlon. The site is at Lake Lanier ( 45 minutes outside Atlanta) and will include a 400 foot swim, 13 mile bike, then 3.1 mile run. For those that have ever crossed a finish line of a road race then you know exactly why I am doing this. Crossing the finish line of any race is where my highest highs in life come from. Seeing people from all over the country who I do not even know cheer me on is a satisfying feeling. All the months of training make that final 100 worth everything.

MY CHALLENGE:

I challenge you to register for your first road race to begin something that will keep you motivated to workout. If you are involved in a charity then what better way to not only get in shape but raise a mass amount of money for your organization. Running also provides great networking opportunites such as joining running clubs or Team in Training.

If you have never run a race before then register for a 5K (3.1 mile) race in the next couple months. If you do 5K's regularly then register for a 10K or half-marathon. Take yourself to the next level and reap the many benefits of the road race world.

I have a question. I have just started running but my knees hurt so I have stopped. Is it normal for your knees and legs to hurt when you first start out? Should I keep going even though the hurt? It's not an aching hurt but a painful hurt.

Great Question! You would have to be more specific as to where the pain was. Is the knee pain below the knee cap? Is the leg pain on the inner portion or outer portion? Do you use orthotics? How old are your shoes?

If it hurts then listen to your body and stop. Maybe walk for a bit until the pain subsides. I will post a topic about shin splints and what we can do to prevent them.
