"Dangers of Diet Soda" will be posted in two weeks. Sorry for the delay.
About 35 years ago, a group of Danish researchers performed a study to see if a diet dominated by oily fish had a correlation to heart disease. The Danes set off to the freezing permafrost regions in North America to study the Inuit Indians. The prevalence of fish is abundant in this region and the Indians eat it constantly with their daily meals.
When the Danes performed their study they expected to find serious problems with coronary artery disease. Instead they found a society not only free of hardened arteries but the Indians had hearts built with immense strength.
Scientists now say that the regular consumption of fish or omega 3 capsules may not only prevent heart disease but can play a vital role in preventing neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
If you were a citizen of Europe and you went to your doctor with risks of heart disease, then instead of putting you on cholesterol lowering drugs or blood pressure medication they would start you off on omega 3’s. “I put every one of my patients on omega-3’s because the patients I see come for treatment of coronary artery disease prevention,” Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, director of the Women’s Heart Center at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. “I put them on 1 gram a day. If they have high triglycerides, I recommend up to 4 grams a day. It has been shown that omega-3’s decrease triglycerides at that amount.”
How can you protect your heart?
- I recommend all of my patients buying a high quality, high grade omega 3. I recommend going to nutrasource.ca/ifos_new to see which omega 3 brands are the purest.
- Calcium builds strength for bones.
- Magnesium builds strength for muscle.
- Omega 3 builds strength for the heart and nervous system
Next week we will focus on the heart and talk about cholesterol and how you can increase your HDL’s by 100%!
