According to research, 40 million Americans suffer from sleep shortages. This shortage of sleep can trigger many problems in our body and we will discuss those in next weeks blog. The time of rest is when our body repairs itself and goes out of stress mode. The average person should be getting between 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. How many are you getting?
What can cause us to have sleep shortage?
* Television before bed.
* Playing on computer before bed.
* Eating after 9:00 PM.
* Using your cell phone at least 15 times a day (text, phone call, games, etc.)
What can I do to improve my quality of sleep?
A technique I recommend to all patients is called "4 x 4 breathing". My patients who perform this exercise are getting longer hours of sleep, better quality of sleep, increased energy the next day, and many other health benefits. Here is a step by step guide to perform the exercise.
1) Breathe in for 4 seconds.
2) Hold breath in for 4 seconds.
3) Breathe our for 4 seconds.
4) Hold breath out for 4 seconds.
Do this exercise with the radio, TV, and cell phone turned off and begin to reap all the benefits of taking your body our of stress mode.
