The Sun is Actually Healthy For You

In the past few years, vitamin D has been studied for its ability to prevent cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and colon cancer. The newest research is showing that vitamin D may have the capability to fight off pancreatic cancer. A September 2006 review of two long-term studies of more than 120,000 adults, showed that those who got the recommended 400 IU/day of vitamin D had a 43% lower risk of developing pancreatic cancer. (Those who took greater than 400 IU did not receive any additional benefits. This study should guide us towards increasing our vitamin D supplementation since pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

According to the Archives of Internal Medicine, more than 50% of American adults are deficient of Vitamin D in their blood. Another study found on Jon Barrons Blog states that 40% of children aged 8 months to 2 years are deficient in vitamin D.

Where can you get Vitamin D?

* Eggs
* Cereal
* Salmon
* Multivitamin (Look for one that doesn't contain retinol, a form of Vitamin A) - I recommend going to your local health food store and purchasing a high quality, high grade multivitamin.
* THE SUN - GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE SUN IN MODERATION

Why are we deficient in vitamin D?

We have a poor sense of nutrition and are not getting our daily dose of sunshine. Every day thousands of Americans are turning to their home as their workplace and more people are staying inside on computers than ever before. Technology is literally killing us and the longer we sit in our homes and seclude ourselves from society then the sicker we will grow as a culture. Even when we do go outside to layout in the sun we load up on poisonous sunscreens that interfere with the production of vitamin D.

Are you saying not to use sunscreen?

*No! If you lay out in the sun in moderation then there should be no reason why you would need sunscreen. Our ancestors who were hunters and gatherers never had sunscreen and the prevalence of cancers were almost non-existent. There are people who will lay out in the sun for 6 hours and if their willing to destroy their body with that much sun exposure then their obviously not focused on being healthy. Those would be the people I recommend sunscreen so that they limit their amount of UVA exposure.

What's the difference between UVA and UVB?

* UVA - Bad Sun - Prevalent throughout the whole day even when the sky is overcast. This exposure increases the number of free radicals in our body which decreases our immunity.

* UVB - Good Sun - Low in morning and evening, high mid-day. UVB helps your skin produce vitamin D.
