A quote I heard recently that resonated well with me was that "the day we stop learning is the day we stop living". There will never be a day when we know all we can about the universe or our focused subject. This brings me to my tennis lessons on Tuesday night.
Every Tuesday my residential complex holds free tennis lessons for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players. I decided that I should go to the beginners class and get back to the fundamentals. There were 8 other people who showed up and the majority of the people were picking up a racket for the first time. My experience with tennis is that I played competitively through lower and middle school, and played socially in high school and college. It was obvious when I first started hitting with them that they thought I was showing off and only trying to feel good about myself for playing with weaker players. One of the other players asked me "Why are you hitting with the beginners when you obviously have played tennis before." My response was "In tennis and everything else we do we will never know everything about our sport or career. I came here because the more I learn about playing tennis whether its one thing will make me a better player". We then went on to talk about how this relates to life and there are so many people who refuse to educate themselves on how to become experts at their topic. Just because you are not in school anymore does not mean you should quit being a student.
We can read books about our career, find mentors who have accomplished what we want to accomplish, attend seminars, and constantly talk to other people in the community about what their looking for from someone in our profession. If you reside in Atlanta then I would be happy to give you ideas on where to go to find people of like mind.
