A recent US News and World Report article (in the January 5, 2008 edition) suggested 5 urgent reasons why people should work at normalizing their weight this year. While many make weight loss a new year’s resolution, few will take the steps necessary to turn the resolution into reality. This lack of action or discipline to follow through is often due to not realizing a strong enough purpose to do the things that need to be done to accomplish one’s goals.
Here are 5 good reasons to take action:
1. Cancer Prevention: Being lean protects you against six cancers that have been linked to extra fat—esophageal, breast, pancreatic, colorectal, endometrial, and kidney—and possibly gallbladder.
2. Insulin Resistance: When your body's tissues become resistant to insulin, you become more vulnerable to high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
3. Fat promotes fat: As fat stores in the body grow, we tend to eat more and move less contributing to more fat.
4. More Fat=More Inflammation: High body fat causes the blood vessels to become inflamed and lays the groundwork for atherosclerosis.
5. More Problems: Fat deposits start getting packed away in places like your liver, muscles, and wrapped around vital organs. In the liver, fat deposits can cause rampant inflammation and scarring that can lead to liver failure.
