FRIDAY THEME: HEALTHY NERVOUS SYSTEM
How do we know if we are healthy?
Take a few seconds to think about your answer then read on.
Which Linda is healthier?
A) Linda Smith goes to her favorite seafood restaurant and gets her regular dish: the Atlanta salmon. Unfortunately the restaurant had bad salmon delivered to them that week. Linda ate her whole meal and immediately following dinner she felt very nauseous. For 24 hours she was hanging her head over the porcelain altar expelling all of the fish.
B) Linda Jones has never been sick her entire life. She always feels good and is never in any type of pain. Linda Jones plays tennis in the morning and shops with friends all day. She then has dinner with her husband and watches television before bed.
Linda Smith is healthier. Although Linda Smith is expelling all the toxins from the fish out of her system; she is still very healthy. Her body sensed that there is a foreign substance in there and removed it immediately from her system. I would define that as healthy.
Linda Jones, who feels great and never gets sick, is the unhealthy of the two. Even though she feels fine, what she doesn't know is that breast cancer is running ramped in her body. The disease is progressing to its later stages but she is not aware of this because she feels no pain.
What's the point?
If as a society we continue to base our health on how we feel then we will continue to become a sick country.
Do you know anyone with diabetes?
As long as they are taking insulin they feel good, but they have a very serious disease that will shorten and affect the quality of their life.
Have you ever had a friend who felt great and went for a routine mammogram, PAP smear or even a lung x-ray only to receive bad news several days later?
Have you ever known someone who seemed to never have a sick day in his life and suddenly dropped dead of a massive heart attack? He felt great the day before. Did you know that over 50% of heart attacks the first sign is the actually heart attack occurring.
The point is that you cannot base health on how you feel, because how you feel is not a reliable guide. You can feel great and be very, very ill.
If health is not how we feel then what is health?
According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This is saying that we cannot base our health on how we feel but we must look at how our body is functioning. As stated earlier, there are many examples where we feel great but our body is not functioning properly.
How do we know how were functioning?
The best way to see how you are functioning is to get your nervous system checked by your chiropractor. Since the nervous system controls ALL function in your body, it is only necessary to look there to determine your level of health.
At Cohen Family Wellness, we will be offering a service where people can get 100% of their nervous system checked on their first visit. Cohen Family Wellness will be opening in August 2009. Be sure to stay tuned for further details.
